Fletchanator's comment: This album is pretty damn hard to find - I've seen it sell on ebay for $50. English rockers Adrenalin Kick put out just this one hard rock album (they sold out and released an industrial metal album in 97), which reminds me in parts of a heavier Warrant (especially the vocalist and the over-used gang vocals). Nothing spectacular and the production is subpar but again it's worth a listen.

Fletchanator's comment: Apparently the 1988 independent debut from these Michigan rockers was traditional heavy metal, but by the time they released their record label debut, Playin' with Desire in 1992, their sound was definitely hair metal/hard rock. There's really nothing to make Alyze stand out from the pack, but they're worth a listen.

Fletchanator's comment: Silly names aside (guitarists named Thunder and Lightning? Really?), Sweet F.A. put out one helluva debut album in 1990. These boys from Indiana played southern-styled hard rock, sounding similar to Tesla and Bulletboys. The single Rhythm of Action got some radio play. Sweet F.A. put out a follow-up album in 1991, before fading into obscurity. I heard they reunited for a few shows in 2007, but I'm not sure if they're still together.

Fletchanator's comment: Contraband were a bona fide hair metal supergroup, featuring members of Shark Island (Black), Ratt (Blotzer), Vixen (Pedersen), LA Guns (Guns) and MSG (Schenker). They put out just the one album, which followed an unplugged session featuring Ratt and Vixen, with Schenker as guest guitarist. Unfortunately the combined effort doesn't really live up to any of the bands the members came from, but that's not to say it's bad or anything. The kind of straight forward rock that resulted makes you think these guys just got together and jammed. There's a definite old fashioned rock 'n roll sound to it.

Fletchanator's comment: Bangalore Choir only ever put out one album, but unlike a lot of one-and-out bands, these guys weren't young strugglers who got one shot and didn't make it. In fact, Bangalore Choir was something of a minor league supergroup. Awesome singer David Reece had previously fronted Dare Force, guitarists Kirk and Mitchell were ex-Razormaid, and the rhythm section was ex-Hericane Alice (incidently, you'll find Dare Force, Razormaid and Hericane Alice all on this blog). Together they combined for one brilliant melodic hard rock album which is very remiscent of Whitesnake's hair metal era stuff (mostly due to Reece sounding quite similar to David Coverdale). It's a shame Bangalore Choir didn't continue for long. Reece went on to form Sircle of Silence, while Ramos and Mayo hooked up with Doug Aldrich (ex-Lion, now playing with Dio and Whitesnake) in Bad Moon Rising and then Burning Rain.

Miami's Cadillac Bratz play a straight forward brand of radio friendly party rock, sounding like a mix of Europe, Danger Danger and Trixter. Nothing really standout, but good honest melodic hard rock.

Fletchanator's comment: This album, the sole recording by AOR band Under Fire, was recorded in 1988 and released many years later, as seems to be the craze these days (small labels finding obscure hard rock from 10-15 years ago and releasing it now). Featuring the keyboard work of Jim Waldo (from late 70s AOR band New England), Under Fire reminds me of some of Foreigner's 1980s stuff. One for the AOR/keyboard fans out there.

Fletchanator's comment: Pure glam, in the vein of Pretty Boy Floyd. This was Bang Gang's debut, featuring sleazy vocals and an above-average sound. I dig the cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy, and songs like Young and the Restless and The Neon Fairytale are good. Not the greatest sleaze glam band around, but definitely solid and worth a listen.

Fletchanator's comment: Badlands were something of a supergroup, featuring future and past members of KISS (Singer), Black Sabbath (Gillen) and Ozzy Osbourne's band (Lee). Don't expect anything sounding like those bands though. On this, their first album, Badlands kick ass with a slice of blues-influenced hard rock, very reminiscent of Led Zeppelin with a hard rock twist. Sadly Gillen died in 1993 - he had a great voice. Jake E Lee is a fantastic guitarist, and Singer's solid on the skins. If you don't already have this one, trust me, you need it!

This is their impressive debut, with some great rocking tunes (Bang Go the Bells, Hammer Swings Down, Shot O' Love) and an above-average ballad (Desperate). Derek Davis had one of those great gravelly voices, at times reminding me of Jeff Keith from Tesla.

The singer doesn't just sound like JBJ, he sings in JBJ's style too. Heck, most of the songs are structured the same as Bon Jovi songs. If you can look past the obvious lack of originality though, Blue Tears are a great listen.

Fletchanator's comment: Archives is the belated CD release of material produced between 1984 and 1989 by one of Hollywood hair metal's best bands you've probably never heard of. In the mid-80s, Sweet Savage were big on the Sunset Strip scene, particularly in Europe, but sadly they split in 89, just when it seemed they were on the verge of breaking out. The lead singer sounds like early Vince Neil and the sound is pure Hollywood glam. The first five songs are studio cuts, the rest are live bootlegs, but it's all good stuff and a must have for serious hair metal fans.

Well, half of the original KISS anyway, and the guys who've kept the band going all these years. Stanley Eisen became Paul Stanley, and Gene Klein became Gene Simmons. This is a bootleg, not an official album, since none was ever released by Wicked Lester. The sound is raw and even more simplistic than the subsequent KISS material, but is a must have for any fans of the make up-wearing glam legends.

Fletchanator's comment: Before they were one of the biggest groove metal bands of the 1990s, Pantera were an unknown glam band from Texas. This is their small-time debut, with second vocalist Glaze, who would give way to Phil Anselmo when the band changed to a more heavy sound. It's almost hard to believe this is Pantera, but Darrell "Dime Bag" Abbott (RIP) is at his blistering best, shredding up the fret board. You can hear various influences, including Van Halen and KISS, and there's a hint of NWOBHM in there as well. Definitely check this one out!

Fletchanator's comment: There's nothing unique about Joker, but the first of two albums they put in the early 90s (followed up by 1992's Cool Deal) is a good effort. The sound is tight party rock, with a vocalist who reminds me of TNT's Tony Harnell. There's some rough edges around the singing, but the guitars are very good. Definitely worth checking out.

Fletchanator's comment: I don't usually upload such recent albums, but I was so pumped about Dirty Looks putting out a new album last year, I thought I'd share it. After an absence of 9 years, Henrik and the boys returned with a classic slice of West Coast sleaze rock. While Gasoline doesn't quite measure up to the classics Cool from the Wire and Turn of the Screw, it's a great album. These boys haven't lost anything over the years, and most importantly haven't compromised their sound. The best song is "If the World Stopped Spinning", which is classic Dirty Looks and wouldn't have been out of place on Cool from the Wire. Recommended.

What does make it worthy of this blog is the fact that it featured a young Mark Slaughter in his first band, prior to Vinnie Vincent Invasion and Slaughter. It's a worthy addition to any hair metal collection for that reason.

Fletchanator's comment: I've been looking for this album on CD for a few years, and would you believe I found it in the discount bin at a music store? This is the only album by Shooting Gallery, a band most noted because it featured former Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy (you'll find Hanoi Rocks' Two Steps from the Move on this blog). It also features former Kill City Dragons singer Billy G Bang (their only album is also on this blog). Unfortunately this doesn't live up to the greatness of Hanoi Rocks, in fact it's not even better than Kill City Dragons. It's sleazy hard rock like those two bands, but doesn't reach the heights of either. Still, it's pretty good and definitely worth adding to your collection if you don't already have it.

Fletchanator's comment: Another band with a lot of potential that was never realised was Blonz. This album was produced by a couple of guys from 70s prog rockers Kansas, and some of the songs were written by the likes of Joe Lynn Turner and the singer from Fierce Heart. After Blonz split, Utz, Taylor and Ogle formed Chaingang. I would compare the Blonz sound to Bon Jovi with Tesla's Jeff Keith on vocals. It's good stuff. Check it out.

Fletchanator's comment: Legendary glam rockers who originated in Finland and took the Sunset Strip scene by storm with this, their sixth album overall and first on a major worldwide label. Sadly it was the last album for drummer Razzle, who was famously killed in a car crash in which Motley Crue's Vince Neil was driving. By 1985 the Rocks had split, but they came back a few years ago to tour and record again. This album showcases a band that were true pioneers of LA hard rock, inspiring the likes of LA Guns and GNR. Highly recommended!

Fletchanator's comment: The second album by Norwegian rockers TNT, and the first to feature American-born vocalist Tony Harnell (who billed himself as Tony Hansen at the time). This album signified TNT's move away from Viking-themed power metal to groove-laden hard rock (although a couple of songs have Viking lyrics), which would reach a peak with their next recording, Tell No Tales. There are some great hard rocking tunes on this album and it's worth it just for Harnell's awesome voice - you should definitely check it out.

Fletchanator's comment: From the land of bizarre collaborations comes this, the first solo album by Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, with support from former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. The result? A slice of pure AOR/hard rock. Weird, I know, but apparently Taylor had been wanting to make this kind of music for a while, and quit Duran Duran when their musical direction started drifting from what he wanted to perform. Thunder is solid AOR with some harder rock overtones.

It wasn't until Metal Health in 1983 that Quiet Riot hit the bigtime, but before that they put out two solid albums. While there aren't the catchy hits like Cum On Feel the Noise or Metal Health (Bang Your Head), the bonus is that these are the only two QR albums to feature the axemanship of Randy Rhoads (who left to join Ozzy Osbourne, where he became a guitar legend before his untimely death). Fletchanator's comment: These guys often get ragged on for being Poison/Crue ripoffs (they even cover Crue tune Toast of the Town on this album) but they're a helluva lot of fun, so who cares? This is their debut album, which is balls-to-the-wall sleaze rock with catchy guitar hooks and kickass vocals. To me, the best sleaze rock is meant to make you think of cruising down Sunset Strip with a bunch of girls, and that's exactly what Pretty Boy Floyd does. I just love this album. Formed by American guitarist Steve Von Saint, a veteran of the LA scene who had played with future members of LA Guns and Faster Pussycat. KCD adopted the sound of the LA sleaze bands, with some English hard rock influences. The vocals vary between the raspy style of Tom Keifer/Brent Muscat and a more clean delivery. Nothing great, but it's fairly rare and an above average sleaze rock offering.

Fletchanator's comment: Adam "Bomb" Brenner played with TKO and Steeler, and even auditioned for KISS while a teenager. His own Seattle-based band, Adam Bomb, put out a string of albums in the 1980s and 90s, including this 1993 effort. 1993 in Seattle wasn't exactly a good time for glam metal bands, but Grave New World bucked the trend.

In fact, this is about the only album I'll upload to this blog that I can guarantee you won't be able to get anywhere else. In the 1980s, Knightshade were the hottest hard rock/hair metal band in New Zealand. This album is their "best of" collecting songs from between 1985 and 1995, and it's not available outside of NZ, and is even rare in this country. Singles such as "Blood and Money" and "Out For the Count" were big hits here back in the day, but my favourite tracks are the ballads "Last Night in the City" and "You Don't Need Me". Knightshade is straight-forward, guitar-orientated hard rock. Enjoy!

Fletchanator's comment: Faster Pussycat almost breaks my rule about not uploading "major" hair metal bands, but since it's the debut album and not their huge hit, Wake Me When It's Over, I'll let it slide. This album is pure, unadulterated LA glam metal, in the vein of LA Guns, GNR and the like. The song Cathouse, named after a club singer Taime Downe owned in LA, is the kind of sleaze anthem you could imagine playing in a Sunset Boulevard strip club back in the 80s, and there are plenty more solid songs on the album.

Fletchanator's comment: A sleazy glam rock band from New York, Spread Eagle managed to put out two albums (one more than most bands of the era, huh?). They're like the East Coast answer to Sunset Strip glam metal, ala GNR, LA Guns etc. The singer has a great voice, mixing together the sound of Axl Rose and Sebastian Bach in one powerful set of vocals. Dirty Blond put out just the one album, which I have to say features one of the most boring album covers of all time. Soundwise, Dirty Blond are a mix of Skid Row and Every Mother's Nightmare. Just Another Night is a great feel-good anthem, and Window Pain is a good ballad. I can't figure out why my copy has 16 songs, when every reference I can find on the 'net has 10 songs. *Shrug* I dunno. This album is rare though - it sold on eBay for $75 just a couple of weeks ago.

Fletchanator's comment: Man, the word Roxx was popular in hair metal in the 80s. We had Roxx Gang, Crystal Roxx, Cherry Roxx, Foxy Roxx, The Roxx, Sgt Roxx... and just plain Roxx. This album is a collection of demos from 1985 to 1989, so the quality is a bit scratchy in places. Don't let that put you off though, because Roxx is a good-time glam metal band. Singer Joey D'Angeli was in Skid Row for a couple of months, before being replaced by Sebastian Bach. Roxx is a mixture of Poison, Motley Crue and other good glam metal bands. Definitely check it out!

I don't know anything else about the band, such as what happened to them, except that according to posts on the heavy harmonies forum, guitarist Jack Pemma passed away in 2004.

Fletchanator's comment: The one and only album released by Pennsylvania five-piece Roughhouse, who were dropped by their label just a year later and folded in 1991. It's a shame, because this self-titled recording is good stuff. Singer Luis Rivera has a vocal style reminiscent of Motley Crue's Vince Neil in the early days (ie Too Fast For Love). The musicianship is solid, with good guitaring. Guitarist Rex Eisen would later join nu metal band Static X, before being kicked out when he was arrested for having sex with an underage girl. Don't let that stop you from enjoying this album though - it's a good listen.

Fletchanator's comment: What do you get when you take a singer from one of the biggest hair metal bands of all time, and the guitarist from arguably the most successful AOR band ever? Well, unfortunately, an end product that isn't as good as either of those bands. But that's not to say that H.S.A.S. isn't worth listening to, because it is. Just don't go expecting something that'll top Van Halen and Journey, because it's not here. Mind you, that's probably impossible anyway.
The abbreviated name stands for Hagar, Schon, Aaronson and Shrieve. The last two aren't big names, but every hair metal/AOR fans will surely know Sammy Hagar (Van Halen) and Neal Schon (Journey). Schon is a vastly underrated guitarist, who gets to show off his axemanship on this album, in a different style than Journey, more hard rock than AOR (especially on Valley of the Kings and Giza). Hagar is a great singer, and that's no different here. Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale makes for an interesting cover, and the best songs on the album, in my opinion are Missing You and the Van Halen-esque Hot and Dirty and He Will Understand. H.S.A.S. was short-lived, with just one album, as Schon went on to play with Bad English, Hardline and later rejoined Journey, while Hagar of course replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen.

Singer Brian Robertson was formerly a guitarist for Thin Lizzy (he played during the band's biggest years, on tracks like 1976's The Boys Are Back in Town). Bassist Jimmy Bain was in Rainbow for a couple of years with Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore in the mid-70s. Those two bands - Thin Lizzy and Rainbow - are probably a good reference point for Wild Horses' sound. It's straight forward 70s-style rock.

Fletchanator's comment: Another one-album-and-gone band, Dirty Blonde were from LA and played the kind of music you'd expect from Sunset Strip in the late 80s and early 90s - sleazy rock in the style of LA Guns and Ratt, but also with a more melodic streak than either of those bands. Most of the songs are good, although why they decided to remake Jim Croce's Bad Bad Leroy Brown is anyone's guess - either way, the song stinks. The song Push Comes to Shove was featured on the first House of Hairspray podcast.

Fletchanator's comment: The one and only solo recording by Canadian rock chick Chrissy Steele. Not only was she hot, but this chick could seriously sing. Some of the songs on this album were written by Loverboy's Mike Reno, so expect plenty of material about love and relationships. The other songwriter was Jeff Paris, who wrote some of Vixen's biggest hits - it's no coincidence then that Chrissy Steele ends up sounding like a one-women Vixen at times (the ballad Love Don't Last Forever is the best song Vixen never recorded).

Fletchanator's comment: This was the debut album of a glam band from (where else?) LA, and the only album to feature this line-up (the other members would come back with different vocalists later on). Singer Roxy Dahl, who went on to join LA Guns for one album under his real name, Chris Van Dahl, has a raspy voice that gives the band an overall sound like Britny Fox, Cinderella and KIX.

Fletchanator's comment: Another one-record-and-out band, Cobra are probably best remembered for featuring Jimi Jamison before he joined Survivor (where he replaced beret-wearing Dave Bickler and sang such hits as Burning Heart and The Moment of Truth). Jamison's singing makes it hard not to compare this with Survivor - if you like Survivor you'll dig this.

Fletchanator's comment: How about a little AOR from Holland? Here we've got the second and last release from Zinatra, who play a brand of keyboard-oriented rock and can lay claim to one of the corniest album covers of all time. After this band folded, keyboardist Robbie Valentine went on to solo fame in Japan, while singer Joss Mennen started up a band with the name Mennen. If you like bands like Journey and Loverboy, you'll like Zinatra.

Fletchanator's comment: Dangerous Toys formed in Austin, Texas in 1981, but didn't release an album until their self-titled effort in 1989. This is their follow-up to that album, which continued their success. Songs like Gimme No Lip and Line 'Em Up got plenty of airplay back in the day, and being the sucker that I am for good hard rock ballads, I like Best of Friends a lot. A cover of Bad Company's Feel Like Makin' Love is included amongst a line-up of southern hard rock tunes that'll have your toes tapping.

This band has a link with Quiet Riot - Tony Cavazo and Robert Sarzo are the younger brothers of Rioters Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo. But the real highlight of this album is the awesome vocals of Kelly Hanson - the guy's got great pipes. Expect crisp, melodic hard rock.

A couple of the band members are in successful bands nowadays - singer Jaime St James replaced Jani Lane as singer for Warrant and guitarist Tommy Thayer adopted the Starman makeup of Ace Frehley in KISS a few years back. In their day, Black 'N Blue were a solid hard rock band. Hold On To 18 is a particular highlight.

Fletchanator's comment: Featuring the distinctive voice of frontman Ron Keel, this is the debut of his self-named band. He formed this band after splitting up his earlier project Steeler, which at one point had axeman extraordinaire Yngwie Malmsteen as its guitarist. Drummer Bobby Marks joined Keel after playing for the band London alongside future GNRer Izzy Stradlin. With song titles like Metal Generation and Thunder and Lightning, this is good, fist-pumping hard rock/metal.
