Black 'n Blue - Black 'n Blue [1984]

Country: USA
Year: 1984
Line up: Jaime St. James (vocals), Tommy Thayer (guitar), Jef Warner (guitar), Patrick Young (bass), Pete Holmes (drums)

Track Listing
1. The Strong Will Rock
2. School Of Hard Knocks
3. Autoblast
4. Hold On To 18
5. Wicked Bitch
6. Action
7. Show Me The Night
8. One For The Money
9. I'm The King
10. Chains Around Heaven

Fletchanator's comment: This is the debut album from Portland, Oregon rockers Black 'N Blue. A couple of the band members are in successful bands nowadays - singer Jaime St James replaced Jani Lane as singer for Warrant and guitarist Tommy Thayer adopted the Starman makeup of Ace Frehley in KISS a few years back. In their day, Black 'N Blue were a solid hard rock band. Hold On To 18 is a particular highlight.

Keel - Lay down the Law [1984]

Country: USA
Year: 1984
Line up: Ron Keel (vocals), Marc Ferrari (guitar), Bryan Jay (guitar), Kenny Chaisson (bass), Bobby Marks (drums)

Track Listing
1. Thunder And Lightning
2. Lay Down The Law
3. Speed Demon
4. Princess Of Illusion
5. Born Ready
6. Metal Generation
7. Till Hell Freezes Over
8. Tonight You're Mine

Fletchanator's comment: Featuring the distinctive voice of frontman Ron Keel, this is the debut of his self-named band. He formed this band after splitting up his earlier project Steeler, which at one point had axeman extraordinaire Yngwie Malmsteen as its guitarist. Drummer Bobby Marks joined Keel after playing for the band London alongside future GNRer Izzy Stradlin. With song titles like Metal Generation and Thunder and Lightning, this is good, fist-pumping hard rock/metal.

Fletchanator's comment: The second album by southern hard rockers Every Mother's Nightmare. It includes a fast-tempo cover of 60s pop hit Tobacco Road. Kind of reminds me of Faster Pussycat, especially the singer's voice.

Fletchanator's comment: This is the first of two albums released by Los Angeles band Biloxi. Released on a small indy label, the album garnered the band considerable success, with their melody-laden slice of AOR, similar to Boston and Night Ranger.

Sgt Roxx - Push and Squeeze [1990]

Country: USA
Year: 1990
Line up: Jack Adams (vocals), Bob O'Connor (guitar), Rob Briles (guitar), Darrin Laszlo (bass), Gabriel Anthony (drums)
Tracks:
1. All You Need
2. Why'd You Lie?
3. Movin' On
4. Push and Squeeze
5. Don't Cry
6. Million Dollar Girls

Fletchanator's comment: This EP by Chicago indy glamsters Sgt Roxx is out of print and as rare as hell. For an indy release, these guys have got a polished sound - they remind me of a mix between Poison and Faster Pussycat. "Don't Cry" is a catchy ballad, and the rest of the songs are pretty good too.

7. In The Mood For Love
8. Miss Fortune
9. All The Time
10. Three's A Charm
11. Under The Night Stars

Fletchanator's comment: Another one-album band, Sea Hags are a West Coast sleaze band in the mould of LA Guns, with plenty of swagger to their music and gravelly vocals full of attitude. Pure cock rock baby!

Kick Axe - Welcome to the Club [1986]

Country: Canada
Year: 1986
Line up: George Criston (vocals), Larry Gillstrom (guitar), Raymond Arthur Harvey (guitar), Victor Langen (bass), Brian Gillstrom (drums)

Track Listing
1. To The Club
2. Feels Good- Don't Stop
3. Comin' After You
4. Make Your Move
5. Never Let Go
6. Hellraisers
7. Can't Take It With You
8. Too Loud...Too Old
9. Feel The Power
10. With A Little Help From My Friends

Fletchanator's comment: The second album from Canadian rockers Kick Axe is a solid effort, without having that x-factor to make it a great album. The sound is similar to Y&T and another Canadian band, Helix - catchy, melodic hard rock. The last track is something of a Canadian hard rock who's who, with the likes of Lee Aaron, Rik Emmett (Triumph), Andy Curran (Coney Hatch) and Cameron Hawkes (FM) joining the boys for a rendition of The Beatles' With A Little Help from My Friends.

Sleeze Beez - Screwed Blued and Tattooed [1989]

Country: Holland
Year: 1989
Line up: Andrew Elt (vocals), Chris Van Jaarsveld (guitar), Don Van Spall (guitar), Ed Jongsma (bass), Jan Kosterand (drums)

Track Listing
1. Rock In The Western World
2. House Is On Fire
3. Screwed, Blued n' Tattooed
4. Stranger Than Paradise
5. Damned If We Do, Damned If We Don't
6. Heroes Die Young
7. This Time
8. When The Brains Go To The Balls
9. Don't Talk About Roses
10. Girls Girls, Nasty Nasty

Fletchanator's comment: This album right here is an underrated (and fairly unknown) gem. It's awesome party metal with a sound that mixes Def Leppard, Poison, Cinderella and even a touch of Winger ("This Time"). Plus it has one of the most ridiculous cock rock song names of all time in "When the Brains Go to the Balls". If this album doesn't get you wanting to party, then there's something wrong with you.

Vinnie Vincent Invasion - Guitars from Hell [Unreleased 1987-1991]

Country: USA
Year: 1987-1991
Line up: Vinnie Vincent (Guitars), Robert Fleischman (Lead Vocals tracks 1-7), Andre LaBelle (Drums), Chris Lee (Bass), Jeff Scott Soto (Lead Vocals track 8), Jimmy Waldo (Keyboards track 8)

Track Listing

  1. Rocks On Fire
  2. Nuke It
  3. Shocker
  4. Invinvible
  5. Truth
  6. Full Shred
  7. Wild Child
  8. Youngblood
Fletchanator's comment: You probably know the story about guitarist Vinnie Vincent, who was in KISS for a short time. After leaving that band he formed Vinnie Vincent Invasion, which released two albums - a self-titled album in 1986 with Robert Fleischman on vocals, and All Systems Go in 1988 with Mark Slaughter (later singer for Slaughter) on vocals. After Slaughter left, Fleischman came back, and the band recorded material for a third album, Guitars from Hell. But the album company went bankrupt and it was never released. This is a bootleg copy of the record, which (as you'd imagine from Vincent) has awesome shredding guitars. As a bonus the last track is from 1987 and has the amazing Jeff Scott Soto on vocals.

8. Rock It
9. Take Your Love
10. Cry For Attention
11. Wild Love
12. Good Emotions

Fletchanator's comment: This is a great slice of party rock, in the vein of Poison and Warrant, with lots of harmonising and a real party attitude. It's great fun - turn it up loud!

Shannon - Shannon [2003]

Country: France
Year: 2003

1. Heartbreaker
2. Love in Hollywood
3. Billion Dollars Rain
4. She's Liar
5. Young and Tough
6. Wild Wild Wild
7. Scared of War
8. Alone in the Dark
9. Reach for the Sky
10. Going Crazy
11. Father
12. Lovehunter
13. One in a Million

Fletchanator's comment: This album may have been released in 2003, but the sound is straight out of the late 80s and early 90s. They remind me of TNT, with a hint of Europe - fast tempo melodic hard rock.

Cry Wolf - Cry Wolf [1989]

Country: USA
Year: 1989
Line up: Timmy Hall (vocals), Steve McKnight (guitar), Phil Deckard (bass), Paul Cancilla (drums)

Track Listing
1. West Wind Blows
2. It Ain't Enough
3. Pretender
4. I Am The Walrus
5. Red Shoes
6. Stop, Look And Listen
7. Face Down In The Wishing Well
8. Wings
9. Long Hard Road
10. Back To You

Fletchanator's comment: Continuing my trend of uploading one-and-out albums is this, the only offering of Cry Wolf. The singer reminds me of the guy from Trixter, while the overall sound is in the league of the likes of Firehouse and Bulletboys. Included on this album is a cover of I Am the Walrus by the Beatles, which is a weird choice for a hard rock band.

Blue Tears - Mad, Bad and Dangerous [2005]

Country: USA
Year: 2005
Line up: Gregg Fulkerson (vocals / guitar), Michael Spears (bass), Bryan Hall (guitar), Charlie Lauderdale (drums)

Tracks
1. Long Way Home
2. Girl Crazy
3. With You Tonight
4. Mystery Man
5. Rock You To Heaven
6. Evidence Of Love
7. Mad, Bad & Dangerous To Know
8. Misty Blue
9. Kisses In The Dark
10. Everywhere I Go
11. Midnight Train
12. Follow Your Heart
13. Russia Tonight
14. Love Machine
15. The Last Serenade
16. Live It Up

Fletchanator's comment: An album from 2005? Doesn't that go against what this blog is all about? Don't worry - the material on this album was recorded for Blue Tears' second album in 1992, but it never got released. Years later, Suncity Records released that material, along with some songs written prior to the band's first album in 1990. This is fantastic AOR which at times sounds so close to Bon Jovi that you'll swear it's Jon singing (check out With You Tonight to see what I mean). Don't miss this one!

Razormaid - First Cutt [1987]

Country: USA
Year: 1987
Line up: Jamie Lee (vocals), John Kirk (guitar), Curt Mitchell (guitar), Dave Wix (bass), Dean Clarkson (drums)

Track Listing
1. Sooner Or Later
2. Fight For Your Love
3. Blue Thunder
4. Obsession
5. Livin' On The Run
6. Victim Of The Night
7. Rock n' Roll Invasion
8. The Drifter
9. Second Time Around
10. Too Late
11. Racing With Time

Fletchanator's comment: I seem to be uploading a lot of albums that were the only releases by their respective bands, and here's another. Razormaid has great guitaring (Mitchell and Kirk went on to join another great band, Bangalore Choir), and a sound that is both melodic and rocking. I definitely recommend this one.

Roxy Blue - Want Some? [1992]

Country: USA
Year: 1992
Line up: Todd Poole (vocals), Sid Fletcher (guitar), Josh Weil (bass), Scotty T. (drums)

Track Listing
1. Too Hot To Handle
2. Sister Sister
3. Times Are Changin'
4. It's So Easy
5. Rob The Cradle
6. Squeeze Box
7. Talk Of The Town
8. Rock-A-Bye Baby
9. Luv On Me
10. Nobody Knows
11. Love's Got A Hold On Me
12. Main Attraction

Fletchanator's comment: Another one-album-and-out band. Roxy Blue was reportedly discovered by Warrant - singer Jani Lane sang back up on Want Some? - so it's no surprise that Roxy Blue sounds a lot like Warrant and other lightweight cock rock bands like Trixter. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's still good, toe-tapping hard rock that's well worth a listen.

Hericane Alice - Tear the House Down [1990]

Country: USA
Year: 1990
Line up: Bruce Naumann (vocals), Danny Gill (guitar), Ian Mayo (bass), Jackie Ramos (drums)

Track Listing
1. Wild, Young And Crazy
2. Bad To Love
3. Tear The House Down
4. Badboy Breakout
5. Need A Lover
6. Too Late
7. Shake, Shake, Shout
8. Crank The Heat Up
9. I Walk alone

Fletchanator's comment: Crazy name for a band huh? Originally called Hurricane Alice, they changed to avoid confusion with the band Hurricane. This was their only album - it's solid hard rock - and after Hericane Alice's split, the drummer and bassist went on to join Bangalore Choir (which I'm also uploading with this update).

Fastway - Trick or Treat soundtrack [1986]

Country: UK
Year: 1986
Line up: Dave King (vocals), Fast Eddie Clarke (guitar), Charlie McCracken (bass), Jerry Shirley (drums)

Track Listing:

1. Trick Or Treat
2. After Midnight
3. Don't Stop The Night
4. Stand Up
5. Tear Down The Walls
6. Get Tough
7. Hold On To The Night
8. Heft
9. If You Could See

Fletchanator's comment: Okay, so this isn't strictly glam metal. Fastway, a British band who released their first album in 1983, were more NWOBHM in terms of look and sound. But you can't get more cheesy than a hard rock band doing the soundtrack to a B-grade horror movie, which is what this is. Trick or Treat is a movie about a dead rocker who uses backwards messages on his records to return from the dead... or something like that, it's been a while since I've seen it. But it's pure 80s cheese with a great rockin' soundtrack. Gotta love it!

Wildside - Under the Influence [1992]

Country: USA
Year: 1992
Line up: Drew Hannah (vocals), Benny Reigndance (guitar), Brent Woods (guitar), Marc Simon (bass), Jimmy Darby (drums)

Track Listing

1. Hang On Lucy
2. So Far Away
3. Monkey See Monkey Do
4. Just Another Night
5. Looks Like Love
6. Lad In Sin
7. Drunkin' With The Blues
8. How Many Lies
9. Hair Of The Dog
10. Heart-N-Soul
11. Kiss This Love Goodbye
12. Clock Strikes

Fletchanator's comment: I just plain love this album. It's unfortunate that Wildside came on the scene too late (by 92 grunge was killing glam metal), but luckily for us listeners they put out a kickass debut album in the form of Under the Influence. Sadly their next release was a change to the grunge sound, but Under the Influence is great. Probably the best comparison I can give is Ratt, especially for Drew Hannah's vocals.
